This week, 270 volunteers from across the city are taking part in the York Cares 'Big Community Challenge' at Hull Road Park.

Over three days they're re-invigorating it as a hub for the community, particularly families and older people.

York Cares are working with the City of York Council and local community organisation York Flourish, who run the 'Secret Gardening Project' in the park for people with dementia.

Each volunteer will give up half a day each, they're coming from employers in the city like Nestle, Aviva, John Lewis, Marriott Hotels and Sainsbury's.

There'll also be volunteers from the University of York and pupils from Osbaldwick Primary School.

The volunteers will be completing a range of tasks over the three days, including, converting a disused shower room into a tool store, redecorating parts of the pavilion, landscaping green spaces; cutting back and replanting bulbs, shrubs and trees, creating new pathways and a woodland walk.

On Thursday afternoon at 4.30pm, there'll be a special opening and celebration event with the Lord Mayor.
