Still no verdict in the Norton Flat Fire case

Still no verdict in the Norton Flat Fire case

2:41pm 20th May 2010
(Updated 3:24pm 20th May 2010)

After 12 hours of deliberating there's still no verdict in the case of Peter Brown.

He's the man accused of starting the Norton Flat Fire last September, in which trainee jockies Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson died.

This morning the judge gave the jury guidance on the charges that Brown faces.

That's two counts of murder, two alternative charges of manslaughter and one of arson with intent to endanger life.

She also tackled the question of intent.

Did Peter Brown intend to kill or serious harm anyone in the flats at Buckrose Court?

Through evidence at the trial we know Brown was drinking alcohol on the night of the blaze.

But the judge told the jury today "a drunken intent is still intent" and not a defence.
