Job cuts and strike action at York Council
5:47am 11th May 2010
Could strike action be on the card at the City of York Council?
Well it's something officials say they can't rule out, as they look to save £15 million over the next three years. The latest job cuts will top 120 as the authority looks to save £5.7 million this year alone.
We're told Children's Social Care will be one department hit, as officials try to make it more efficient. There's 227 children in the council's care. That's above the national average - and could cost the authority another half a million in 2010 and 2011 if the rise continues.
That's something the council can't afford - so they're looking to "redesign" as they call it. The council says it's doing everything they can to avoid compulsory redundancies, by redeploying and retraining staff.
