Malton and Thirsk election candidate DIES

7:39pm 22nd April 2010
(Updated 10:45am 25th April 2010)

Thirsk and Malton will not be electing an MP on May 6th.

It follows the tragic and sudden death of UKIP candidate John Boakes.

He was due to attend a hustings with all the political candidates on Wednesday night, but never arrived.

Mr Boakes cause of death is currently unknown.

Under electorial rules, if nominations have closed for a constitency and someone dies, then the party of the deceased candidate can call for a delay.

That's exactly what happened in this case.

The people of Malton and Thirsk will now be going to the polls on May 27th.
