Police need to speak to a York couple who witnessed an attempted robbery and assault last night.

We're told they're vital witnesses and acted as Good Samaritans taking the 35 year old male victim to hospital.

He was assaulted at knife point on the riverside walk, adjacent to the West Esplanade, by two youths aged 16 or 17.

The pair demanded money, when the victim refused they cut his face with the blade.

A description of the youths involved: The first is approximately 5ft 6in tall with a stocky build and is possibly called Mark.  The only description of the second youth is that he is also 5ft 6in with a medium build.

Anyone who witnessed the three men walking from the railway station to where the assault took place or has any information that could help with the enquiry, in particular the couple who helped the victim, is asked to contact DC Jennifer Cartwright of York CID on 0845 6060247 quoting reference number 12100061621.  Alternatively, they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
