Traders Give Verdict on York's New Shambles Market

Traders on York's new Shambles Market have welcomed it's "lighter and brighter" atmosphere but say more needs to be done to finish the job.
Minster FM has been down to the revamped market to take a look as it's £1.6 million revamp continues.
The traders we spoke said the new stalls were lighter and brighter and praised the last minute work put in by workers to get the market ready for it's move today.
But there are also concerns about some cobbles which seems to have sunk under the weight of equipment and pipes which don't run into the drains.
Traders were also unhappy about not being able to have tables at the side of their stalls, which the council told them to remove to allow wider access.
York Council says there are 87 regular traders and 30 casual traders at the new Shambles Market, with 12 new traders signing up. It adds that the work on the market is not yet complete and the market will be complete in the Spring.
Gill Cooper, City Centre and Market Project Manager, said:
“We’ve always said it would be back in the Shambles market place ready for St Nicholas Fair and we’ve honoured that promise to our traders. As we’ve said before, work to the site between Parliament Street and the Shambles will be completed early next year when the full effect of the benefits for traders and, importantly, their customers can be felt. Meanwhile, traders are saying the stalls are lighter and brighter, and we’re working with them to limit the impact of the works on their business while we’ve a whole raft of promotional events that started before the move and will continue well after completion.”
Shambles Market is open every day between 9am and 5pm (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day).
