The annual giant pumpkin competition which was held on Saturday 25th October at the opening of the York Maze Hallowe’en festival.
The monster fruit grown by Mal Carter from Middlesbrough tipped the scales at 1025lb (465kg), and took first place to win the coveted Great Pumpkin Commonwealth plaque and £500 cash.
York Maze is the North of England venue for the prestigious International Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC) competition.
Says Tom Pearcy from York Maze:
“There was a good field of entries this year for the giant pumpkin competition with cash prizes for the top three pumpkins. The children’s category was won by Ed Stansfield aged 6 from Hebden Bridge who managed to grow a very respectable 86lb (39kg) pumpkin, which weighed more than he did!”
Collecting his £500 first place prize money Mal Carter said:
“I’m thrilled to have won. I’ve been growing giant pumpkins for years but this is by far the biggest pumpkin I’ve ever grown. All those years of pumpkin growing have finally paid off.”
Mal’s giant pumpkin is now being turned into the UK’s biggest pumpkin carving by professional 3D artist Christian Russell. The giant pumpkin carving along with other entries will be on display at York Maze as part of their Hallowe’en festival until Saturday 1st November.
