Traders In York's Concerns For Shambles Market Revamp
9:23am 16th September 2014
Market traders in York are worried the late completion of the Shambles Market renovations means some will be left without a stall before the St Nicholas market in November.1 in 8 stalls wont be ready on time but the city council says temporary stalls will be used until the work's done and promises no-one will be left without a stall. They also said they will move some traders back on to Parliament Street in the New Year if they need to.
Speaking at the new launch, Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “The £1.6 million refurbishment of the market promised a better business proposition for the city centre and this rebranding is an important element of fulfilling that promise which reflects the market’s close connection with the Shambles.
“The building works currently underway involves improving the medieval snickets linking the market and Shambles, and the team is working with businesses to maximise the potential of their frontage onto the refurbished and much more flexible market space.
Traders at the market are hoping that the changes to current lay out are finished before the winter as temporary stalls will be diffcult to trade from in the colder weather.
