A59 Poppleton Ring Road Ready for Tour de France - But More Works Afterwards...
5:54pm 1st July 2014
York Council says the road surface at the junction of the A59/Outer Ring Road is ready along the route of the Tour de France, which will see the peloton travel down it on Sunday.
But the authority says there are some works on footpaths and traffic islands which haven't been completed. The contractors are working around the clock to complete these but the council stresses that the work which hasn't been finished won’t affect the race.
The council says it is now working with it's contractor to put in plants and lots of yellow in the area ahead of the race on Sunday.
The authority has announced the following road closures which are in place until Wednesday:
- 19:00 to 23:00 single lane working of A59 at Station Road Junction – Traffic signals and island surfacing
- Tuesday 19:00 to 23:00 Inbound road closure on A59 East of Roundabout – Completion of footway construction
It means the roadworks, which are connected to the new Poppleton Park and Ride site, will have to be continued after Sunday's event. The road programme, which is more than a month overdue, does not yet have an estimated final completion date.
The council is stressing that the road will be ready for the Tour de France and that once the longer term works are complete, the area will benefit from lower traffic levels due to the new Park and RIde.
