This year’s Heart of York (HoY) Bike Ride t-shirt has been unveiled. The design features an iconic bicycle and heart motif set into a series of ‘heart beat lines’ and is printed on a ‘British Heart Foundation red’ t-shirt, to link to the charity behind the event. It will be given out to cyclists taking part in the HoY Bike Ride on Sunday 7 September.

The t-shirt was designed by Joseph Farmer, BA Design student at York St John University. Joseph has been selected to exhibit his final year project at New Designers this July. The show sees over 3,000 of the most talented, newly graduated designers from the UK’s leading universities exhibit their work. Joseph’s project looked at improving sustainability in transport design, particularly cycling, and explored the use of more sustainable materials and manufacturing processes for this ‘green’ form of transport. Fittingly, he designed a bicycle made out of hardwood to provide a durable and lightweight frame in an aerodynamic design.

Warren Fearn, Head of Programme, BA Design, at the University, said: “We are thrilled that Joseph has been invited to exhibit his work at New Designers, the UK’s most important graduate design exhibition. And it’s fantastic that on top of this his Heart of York Bike Ride t-shirt design was selected. We look forward to seeing cyclists wearing the t-shirt at the event, and indeed around York after the event. Many of our staff and students take part in HoY so we look forward to seeing the t-shirt worn around campus too!”.

Phil McMahon, BHF York Committee Vice Chair and Lead Event Organiser, said: “We’re really pleased with this year’s t-shirt design - a great memento for those taking part! This year’s Heart of York Bike Ride is officially open for registration and we’re encouraging everyone to register early to save their place and get an early booking discount. This event is for cyclists of all abilities and is raising funds for pioneering British Heart Foundation heart failure research.”

The Heart of York Bike Ride takes place on Sunday 7 September and offers cyclists aged 14 and over the choice of a 22 mile or 40 mile on-road route through some of North Yorkshire’s finest countryside and moorland. Both routes start from the York St John sports fields on Haxby Road. Individual cyclists and team of five can register now at www.bhf.org.uk/heartofyorkbikeride.

The event is organised by the BHF York Fundraising Committee in partnership with York St John University, the City of York Council, and Just 30. Cycle Street (York), will once again be on hand to provide maintenance support throughout the bike ride.
