It occurred overnight between Thursday 12 June and Friday 13 June 2014, from a grave at Fordlands Road cemetery.
The thieves stole a gold chain with a locket holding pictures of the rightful owner’s parents, and four plastic hearts on sticks.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said:
“It is beyond belief that someone could stoop so low as to steal what is clearly a treasured family memento and items of little monetary value from a grave.
“This utterly heartless and cruel act has naturally left the victim feeling deeply upset.
“If you have any information which help to identify the callous thief, I urge you to contact the police immediately.”
Anyone who can assist with this enquiry should contact York police on 101, select option 2 and ask for PC 1436, using only the numbers.
Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting reference number 12140096014.
