York Cycling Charity Uses Crowdfunding to Improve Cycle Path

1:18pm 21st May 2014

York Greenway Champions group is being applauded by City of York Council for its novel approach to fund raising for a free festival for July’s Grand Départ and to improve a major cycle path.

This local group, dedicated to getting people out on their bikes to enjoy the traffic-free routes in the country around York, is using crowd funding to pay for their plans. This form of fund raising has been used to finance everything from small businesses start-ups to feature-film productions. ‘Start Some Good’ is a crowd funding website specifically set up to support not-for-profit ventures that will have a social impact and the group is inviting interested investors to visit York Greenway Champions’ crowd funding site, watch the short promotional video and read more about the project – before the deadline of 16 June.

The project aims to raise money that will fund a cycling festival called ‘Tour le Solar System’ which will run throughout June. The festival’s grand finale called ‘On Yer Bike’ will run on the day of the Grand Départ itself. This will be part of the highly-successful York: Be part of it festival which is adding significant cultural value to this summer of cycling. The funding will also go towards a lasting make over of the University of York’s 10-kilometre scale model of the solar system

After the Tour de France’s peloton has cycled out of York on 6 July, York Greenway Champions aim to encourage residents and visitors to get ‘On Yer Bike’ and enjoy an afternoon of fun and fresh air with world music at Brunswick Organic Nursery, and an ‘Afternoon of Americana’ at Naburn Station Café with plenty to see along the way. The more energetic can reach as far as Pluto at the end of the path at Riccall.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “I’m delighted that the Tour de France has inspired such innovation and I wish the Champions every success with their bid. Their success will not only add yet another brilliant opportunity for Tour spectators to try out the best of York, but gives a lasting boost to this beautiful cycle path.”
