York Student Gets Chance to Perform at Grand Opera House
9:52am 12th May 2014
Clare Aldrich has been given £300 of funding by O2 Think Big to put on a performance of Cendrillon at the Grand Opera House York.
The 20 year-old who lives in Heslington, York, is in her second year at the University of York, studying BA Music. She is an opera singer and part of the university operatic society, where she is head of production.
The opera society is putting together a performance of Cendrillon – the story of Cinderella. The society’s adaptation reimagines this classic fairy-tale through the eyes of a WWII veteran, reminiscing on his war-time romance. The 79 member cast sing in English, making it accessible for the audience. This production is one night only, on the 20th June 2014.
As the performance will be in the Grand Opera House York, it is an expensive venture for the society, so Clare is fundraising with various events to ensure the performance will go ahead.
O2’s Think Big supports young people such as Clare all over the UK by transforming their creativity and passions into projects that benefit their local communities through money, support and training.
The initiative works by putting cash directly in the hands of young people and supporting them to use the money in a way that delivers a positive impact in their local area.
In addition to the financial support, Clare will receive substantial training and mentoring from experienced O2 professionals, to give her a hand in tackling the issues of creating an information booklet of this kind.
“I was ecstatic, so delighted and grateful, to receive this funding from O2 Think Big which has allowed us to create the set for the show. The production team and cast of Cendrillon are all students, so this experience is invaluable, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without funding.”
Bill Eyres, head of O2 Think Big said:
“Young people are brimming with ideas, passion and enthusiasm and we want to encourage all of that exciting creativity. That’s exactly what O2 Think Big is about. We give bright young people the tools and help needed to grow their passion and ideas.
“Clare impressed us with her commitment to making a real difference to her local community and we wish her every success in what’s a really worthwhile project.”
O2 Think Big has helped to fund and make over 4,000 youth projects happen across the UK over the past 3 years.
