Actors to Hold French Themed Events in York in Tour de France Build Up

Riding Lights and Cllr Crisp launch York Be Part of It 300414

7:43pm 30th April 2014

Riding Lights Theatre Company is celebrating Yorkshire's starring role in the Tour de France 2014 with a series of French-themed events at Friargate Theatre. These are all leading up to the day of Le Grand Départ itself when Riding Lights will be performing around York as part of the York: Be part of it festivities on Sunday 6 July.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “I’m so pleased that Riding Lights will be serving up the city this delicious dish of French fare for York: Be part of it. FRENCH FRIes is aFriday night feast of music and mayhem, comedy, mime and poetry, all served up with a glass of Bordeaux from our neighbours across the channel, and mouth-watering chips from Plonkers, the Company’s neighbours round the corner.”

The fun starts with King Courgette on Friday 2 May, a home-grown old-time vegetable band well known for delighting audiences with Americana and folk music. Other Friday nights include Right Ici, Right Maintenant – Friargate’s regular improv comedy night, now with an added 'en français' twist as our regular troupe of comedians will be performing the evening in French, (or more likely 'franglais'). We’ve also got folk from Flossie Malavialle, a talented singer from Nîmes via Darlington. Plus throughout the whole run of events Friargate will be hosting a photography exhibition of French landscapes and cyclescapes by Paul Telford.

On Friday 20 June there will be a chance to don a flat cap and escape all this continental palaver at (Le) Yorkshire Puddin' Night, a fund-raising evening for Acting Up! – Riding Lights Youth Theatre for young people with additional needs.

Paul Burbridge, Riding Lights Artistic Director said: “We are delighted that Stage Two of Le Grand Départ is coming right past our doors at Friargate Theatre. For this brilliant FRENCH FRIes season we are transforming our theatre into a wonderfully atmospheric French café, where we hope to welcome lots of people who might not yet have discovered the delights of such an adaptable venue – great for theatre, comedy, music, mine, poetry and more. We want people to come and be entertained, to chat, drink, relax and eat chips (if so desired!).”

All FRENCH FRIes events are held at 7.30pm at Friargate Theatre, Lower Friargate, York, YO1 9SL.
