People in Ryedale Given Chance to Save £310 on Energy Bills

10:36am 30th April 2014

People in Malton, Pickering and Kirkbymoorside are being offered free insulation which could save up to £310 a year on energy bills by Ryedale District Council working with Yorkshire Energy Partnership.

The ‘Wrapping up Yorkshire’ scheme, launched at the start of April, aims to improve home comfort, reduce cold-related illness, save residents money on their fuel bills, and help tackle fuel poverty.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, a house can lose up to 60 % of its heating through its walls and roof – so householders can save up to £310 a year by fitting both loft and cavity wall insulation.

Subject to a free, no-obligation home survey, any householders who own their home, or rent from a private landlord, can get free loft and cavity wall insulation regardless of personal circumstances.  Homes with less than 20cm / 8” of loft insulation can also be topped up to the recommended level of 27cm / 12”.

This scheme is funded by the national energy providers, required as part of the Government’s ‘Energy Company Obligation’ to improve the insulation of millions of homes across the UK.

Kim Robertshaw, Housing Services Manager at Ryedale District Council hopes it will greatly reduce fuel bills and improve the health of those most susceptible to illnesses as a result of cold homes:

“Insulating your home is the best way to hold on to your heat, so you’ll be able to turn your thermostat down and save money on your fuel bills.

“This scheme will help a lot of Ryedale’s residents to protect themselves against fuel poverty. We’re urging people to get in touch with Yorkshire Energy Partnership before the cooler weather returns - by calling 01904 545 020 and quoting ‘Wrapping up Yorkshire.”

Lofts must be clear of stored items before insulation is fitted – vulnerable householders (those with health issues, elderly, young children) should mention if they would be unable to do this, as help may be available.

For more information or to claim your FREE insulation, call Yorkshire Energy Partnership on 01904 545 020 quoting ‘Wrapping up Yorkshire’, or visit www.yorkshireenergypartnership.org.uk/advice to apply online.
