York To Host International Giant Pumpkin Competition

York Maze

6:43am 16th April 2014

York Maze which has been holding a giant pumpkin competition as part of its annual Halloween Festival has now become the North of England venue for the prestigious Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC) competition.

Ian Paton, UK record breaking pumpkin grower and European representative of the GPC says, “The GPC is recognised internationally as the home of giant pumpkin growing. There are around 75 sanctioned GPC weigh-off sites across the USA and Canada and another twenty across Europe.

“The GPC’s mission is to encourage people to grow giant pumpkins, so we are delighted that having York Maze as a North of England site will help inspire growers in the North to get involved.”

Says Tom Pearcy from York Maze, “We will continue to offer the UK’s biggest prize in pumpkin growing with £2000 for anyone who can set a new UK record. Now also as the official GPC site for the North of England, anyone entering a pumpkin in the York Maze Halloween festival will also be eligible for the European and international prizes with a prize of up to $6000 for a world record breaking pumpkin.”

York Maze has dozens of pairs of giant pumpkin seeds to give away to anyone who would like a go at growing a giant pumpkin and entering the competition at York Maze on Sat 25th October.

Says Tom Pearcy “Now is the time to start planting pumpkin seeds ready for October. Anyone who would like to claim a pair of giant pumpkin seeds should email with their name and address and a brief explanation of why they think they would make the perfect pumpkin growers. We’ll pick the winners and post them their giant pumpkin seeds together with advice on how to grow a record breaker.”

Anyone who sets a new UK record at the York Maze Halloween event will win £2000. If the record isn’t broken the heaviest pumpkin on display at York Maze will win £500, with £250 for the second and £100 for third places. The biggest pumpkin grown by a child will win £50 with goody bags for runners up and all children entering a pumpkin in the competition will get free entry to the York Maze Halloween festival on the pumpkin competition day Saturday 25 October 2014.
