VIDEO: New John Lewis, M&S and Next Stores Open in York

Crowds of shoppers gathered at the new Vangarde Shopping Park to celebrate the opening of York’s first John Lewis, Yorkshire’s largest M&S store and a state-of-the-art Next store.

Minster FM's Kevin Larkin went down to have a look.

It comes after months of environmental work and construction on site including individually catching and rehoming Great Crested Newts,

Deb O’Donnell, Centre Manager at Vangarde Shopping Park said: "The opening of the Vangarde Shopping Park has been highly anticipated by shoppers and residents for many years in York. Today marks the opening of a brand new shopping destination that has created hundreds of new jobs and firmly puts York on the map as a creditable shopping destination in Yorkshire."

"I’m thrilled to welcome our three major retailers to their new home at Vangarde which will certainly draw in thousands of local residents over the next week. The Vangarde Shopping Park has the local community at its heart and we will be welcoming residents to the park for lots of exciting events in coming months – plus we’ll be launching lots of exclusive competitions on our social media channels."

At 9am there were ribbon cuttings and in-store celebrations at all three stores.Including at M&S where manager Hilary Wilkinson opened the store.

Hilary Wilkinson said: “It’s great to finally be able to welcome customers into the new store and show them what we have been working on. The new store will bring the best that M&S has to offer to shoppers in York. The feedback from our customers on all the new features has been very positive so far with the Beauty section and Autograph department, along with the striking green living walls, being key talking points. We look forward to welcoming customers into the store over the weeks and months to come.”

James Alexander, Leader of City of York Council said: “It’s a direct reflection of the health of York’s economy and the partnership working that takes place across the city to ensure that businesses want to invest here, that we continue to attract high quality brands such as John Lewis to York. The new store not only adds to the vibrant and incredibly diverse retail offer that the city already has to offer, but importantly brings new jobs for people in York”.

The Vangarde Shopping Park's restaurants including Giraffe, Costa Coffee, Prezzo, Ed’s Easy Diner, Nando’s and Frankie & Benny’s, will open in May 2014.
