More than 700 jobs at Kellingley Colliery are at risk as UK Coal consults on the mine's future.

A UK Coal spokesman says "We have started today consultations with the unions on looking at the way forward - that is, looking at reducing numbers in the coming months."

"We are looking to secure the best outcome possible."

The firm is hoping for an emergency cash injection of up to £20 million and talks will take place tomorrow with ministers.

Although the case for government cash to keep Kellingley going looks unlikely. A DECC spokesperson said: "The future of UK Coal is primarily a commercial matter. However we are in close contact with the company to ensure that government is kept aware of the challenges they face."

Keith Hartshorne from the National Union of Mineworkers broke the news to the men this afternoon:

Selby MP Nigel Adams says he's saddened by the news and will do all he can to help save jobs.
