Search for Volunteers for North York Moors
9:13am 4th March 2014
The North York Moors National Park is increasing the range of volunteer opportunities it offers and is inviting interested people to an open day on 12 March 2014 to find out more.
Traditionally volunteers with the National Park have got involved in conservation projects and work to improve the network of footpaths and bridleways in the North York Moors. Following the success of a relatively new group of volunteers working in the Inspired by… gallery and feedback from people wanting to help with other aspects of the Authority’s work, the National Park is keen to expand the range of opportunities it offers.
The National Park is looking to recruit volunteers across four broad areas but is also open to ideas on other ways that people can contribute their experience and enthusiasm:
- Visitor Centres – to provide a warm welcome and information to visitors and to assist staff with retail at Sutton Bank and The Moors National Park Centres. Volunteers are also needed to play a part in maintaining the grounds at The Moors National Park Centre.
- Events – to help with the running and promotion of a wide range of large scale events, workshops and children’s activities.
- Guided walks – to join an existing team of volunteers who lead informative walks across the North York Moors looking at the area’s wildlife and heritage.
- Inspired by… gallery – to help set up, promote and steward the gallery’s programme of exhibitions.
Graham Stubbs, the Head of the National Park Authority’s Volunteer Service, said:
"Over the last ten years, our volunteers have made an outstanding contribution to the National Park complementing and extending the work of our own staff. They bring an enormous range of skills and experience and we would like eventually to be able to offer volunteer opportunities in every area of our work.
"For the National Park it brings new ideas, different expertise and extra pairs of hands to deliver a good service to our residents and visitors. For the volunteer it can bring an opportunity to learn new skills, gain work experience, meet like-minded people or simply achieve a sense of pride in giving something back to an area they enjoy."
Chris Gray volunteers at the Inspired by… gallery. He added:
“Volunteering gives a great sense of achievement and working with a group of new-found friends makes the day fly by. I always look forward to my volunteering days – driving to Danby over the moors and home again after a rewarding day makes this commuter heaven!”
An information event for those interested in volunteering with the National Park is being held at The Moors National Park Centre, Danby from 10.30am to 12.30pm on 12 March 2014. Anyone unable to make the event can get information by calling 01439 772700, emailing email@example.com or speaking to staff at one of the National Park Centres.
