York Hospital Radio Celebrates 50 Years On Air
10:44am 26th January 2014
How do you best celebrate 50 years of service to your loyal listeners?
York Hospital Radio is going all-out, with a quirky range of broadcasts and programmes that reflects the effort and dedication they've thrown in over the past half-century.
This afternoon from 12, you'll be able to listen to members past and present as they share their personal memories of their time at the radio station.
Their golden birthday week continues to flourish in terms of excitement and nostalgia, as the team prepares a celebration of music from the last 50 years - in effect, the soundtrack to York Hospital Radio's entire lifetime.
They've come on in leaps and bounds since the distant days of 1964 - where their debut 45-minute show took a gruelling 12 hours of recording and editing.
Now, the self-styled 'Friends of the Bedside' broadcast to patients 24 hours a day - and bring a heady mix of music shows, requests, football commentary, plays from York Theatre Royal, and a range of outside broadcasts as long as your arm.
Chairman Ian Clennan is proud to be involved, as he told Minster FM:
"It's an amazing achievement for a voluntary organisation and registered charity to still be doing what they were doing 50 years ago.
"There are long periods of time when people are in hospital, and they're lonely or bored. They don't want to watch the TV, but they'll quite happily put the headphones on and listen to our radio output.
"We want to make sure we're here for the next ten years - and hopefully the next 50."
