York Council is reminding people that they need to sign up soon to pay to have more one green bin emptied, when garden waste collections start again in April.

The council will continue to empty one garden waste bin free of charge but those who want more than one garden waste bin emptied will need to sign up to the scheme.  Each additional garden waste bin costs £35 per calendar year. Garden waste will be collected from April to October 2014.

The council says recent changes to garden waste collections will contribute towards a saving of £123,000 towards a savings target of £190,000.

Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “We are committed to providing the best service possible to residents during these challenging financial times. The decision to charge for the second bin comes after an extensive consultation with residents. This option is the best to align both the needs of residents and the need for the council to save money.”

Residents who currently receive a garden waste service can subscribe to the scheme simply by using the Do It Online feature on www.york.gov.uk/DoItOnline or calling 01904 551551. To find out more about the Garden Waste Subscription scheme go to their website.
