People Encouraged to Sign Up for York 2014 Sporting Events

12:43pm 17th January 2014

Sports clubs, fitness instructors and health organisations are being invited to sign up to join a record number of sport and physical activity events taking place in York throughout 2014.

City of York Council is encouraging York’s sporting community to take part in a number of free events from May to October next year. The events will showcase the many fitness opportunities available in the city and encourage more residents to join, or volunteer at, sports clubs across the city.

Cllr Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “In the year that we can all be inspired by the Tour de France Grand Départ, there will be a record number of events promoting health, fitness and fun in the city.

“We hope that the Tour de France will contribute to a lasting legacy of more people enjoying general fitness and the voluntary sports clubs in York – about 300 in total – play a key role in this. In previous years we have seen audiences of over 3,000 at some of the events and we hope that even more organisations and residents will join in this year. Increased sports participation is good for clubs and helps York residents reach their 30 minutes of physical activity a day.”

Highlights of the legacy programme of events include:

  • The Just 30 Fair on Saturday 24 May
  • Tour de France Grand Depart on Sunday 6 July
  • Commonwealth Games Open Days from Wednesday 23 July to Sunday 3 August
  • Celebrating Ability Week from Monday 4 to Sunday 10 August
  • Eng-AGE 50+ Games from Saturday 27 September to Sunday 5 October.

All events will showcase the best of York’s clubs and physical activity providers and give the public the chance to find out more about taking part in sport and physical activity.
