York MP Calls for Meeting with Minister Over Army HQ Move

York Central MP, Hugh Bayley, has received a reply from the Armed Forces Minister, Mark Francois MP, to his recent letters to Andrew Robathan  about the Government’s decision to move the merged HQ 15 (North East) Brigade, currently based at Imphal Barracks in York, and HQ 4th (Mechanised) Brigade to Catterick to form the Adaptable Force Brigade Headquarters in the North East.   Mr. Bayley has written again to the Minister asking him to meet to discuss this decision.  Mr. Bayley is also concerned about the implications of the move for civilian staff currently based at Imphal Barracks in York.

Mr. Bayley believes it would be cheaper and more efficient to base a new Army command merged Headquarters 15 (North East) Brigade and Headquarters 4th (Mechanised) Brigade, at York rather than move it to Catterick Garrison.  Whilst the decision to move Headquarters 1st Division from Germany to York is welcome, he believes there is sufficient space in York to provide high quality accommodation for the new Headquarters 1st Division without having to transfer the Adaptable Force Brigade Headquarters to Catterick.  The Adaptable Force Brigade Headquarters will command Army units spread across the whole of the north of England and York has much better road and rail communications with other parts of the world than Catterick.

Hugh Bayley MP says:

“The move to York of a two star General and the Headquarters 1st Division is of course most welcome.  However, there are considerable cost implications for adapting accommodation at Catterick to house the newly merged  Adaptable Force Brigade, and there are considerable implications for the redeployment of civilian staff currently based in York. If they move the Headquarters to Catterick, the Government must be honest about how much it will cost, and why they want to spend public money on building new premises when there is perfectly adequate empty space in York.”

“I hope the Minister will meet me to discuss these issues.  I also hope the government will think again and decide to base the Adaptable Force Brigade in York.”
