Mayor Of Selby's Added Touch To Remembrance Sunday Service

Remembrance Sunday

10:52am 10th November 2013
(Updated 11:03am 10th November 2013)

This year, Remembrance Sunday in Selby will be even more moving than usual.

Mayor of Selby Graham Gatman - who is a former member of the Armed Forces - has organised a ceremony that will touch the heart of everyone there.

War poems by Wilfred Owen - Futility, Dulce et Decorum Est, and The Soldier - will be read to the congregation by members of the Forces.

The haunting, powerful pieces by Owen tear apart the propaganda that existed at the time of war - the idealistic notion that war was a thrilling adventure; and that it was "sweet and honourable" for young men to die for their country.

The Piper's Final Lament will also be played - a deep, meaningful piece that would move the strongest soul to tears.

Mayor Selby told Minster FM News: "The world is not a safe place sometimes, and we need brave individuals to stand in front of us."

"[Today's] a special day for us to remember that there are some very brave people out there, and that's why I pay my respects."
