(Updated 1:32pm 3rd September 2009)

The funeral of York's first soldier to have died in Afghanistan is taking place later.

Lance Bombadier Matthew Hatton died when he was caught in a double explosion in Helmand.

The service will be held at York Minster this afternoon

Commrades, freinds and strangers have been leaving messages on a facebook group since Matthew's death last month.

Lee Wotherspoon was the 23 year olds team commander -and says the lads  over in Sangin are missing him a lot and and they're all devestated they won't be able to attend the funeral.

Alan never knew Mathew but has written 'it is too often taken for granted by us all, that soldiers put themselves in harms way and are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of their country. '
