Campaigners To Fight Planned Closure of Malton and Helmsley Tourist Centres

5:53pm 31st October 2013

Campaigners in Malton and Helmsley say they will fight the proposed closure of tourist information centres in the towns.

Ryedale Council will discuss tonight closing the centres in the towns and replacing them with a phone-based service run out of the Pickering tourist centre and a greater online presence.

The district council says it has to make the changes to reflect changes in the tourism market and to save £54,000 a year.

But the Mayor of Malton Joan Lawrence says she'll fight to keep the centre open.

Chris Parkin from Helmsley Town Council also hoped local businesses will step in to provide funding to keep it open.

Julian Rudd from Ryedale District Council says he's happy to sit down with them to discuss the options.
