A 54-year-old woman from the York area was pronounced dead at the scene when her black Rover 25 collided with an oil tanker on Sheriff Hutton Road at around 9.10am on Thursday 15 August 2013.
The driver of the tanker was treated for shock by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.
The collision occurred around half-a-mile from Strensall, as the tanker headed towards Sheriff Hutton from Strensall and the car travelled in the opposite direction.
Officers are seeking witnesses to the collision and believe a number of people with information have yet to come forward.
Traffic Sgt Hamish Halloway, of North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group, said: "It is believed that at least five vehicles drove past the scene of the collision at the time it occurred.
"I urge drivers of those vehicles to make contact with the police as they may have vital information that can help with our enquiries.
"Sadly, a woman has lost her life as a result of this collision and it is important that we establish exactly what happened."
Sheriff Hutton Road between Strensall and Sheriff Hutton was closed while emergency services dealt with the collision and was reopened at around 2.20pm.
Anyone who can help officers with their enquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 - select option 2 - and ask for Hamish Halloway.
