Search for Most Inspirational 50+ Sport Player in York

12:21pm 2nd August 2013

Nominations are now open to find York’s most inspirational individual over 50 for sport and activity in York. Organised by City of York Council’s sport and active leisure team as part of its Eng-AGE programme of activities for the over 50’s, the award for York’s Older People’s Champion for Sport and Active Leisure will celebrate commitment to, or participation in, active leisure in York.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “We know that 30 minutes physical activity a day is important for happiness and health, whatever your age. York has a wealth of active opportunities for those over 50 and this award recognises individual achievement, either through sports participation or by encouraging and enabling others to take part. Anyone can nominate someone they know so we look forward to receiving your entries!”

There is only one formal award criteria and that is that all nominees should be over 50. Those put forward may be a local ambassador for sport in some way, or involved as a professional, volunteer, teacher or coach. Nominees could even be a family member or friend who has a personal story of achievement connected with sport and physical activity.

The award is intended to recognise and celebrate positive contributions to the world of sport and active leisure and will be presented at an evening event to which all nominees will be invited. This will take place during York’s 50+ Festival at the end of September.

The winner may be invited to be an ambassador at a number of city events around health and fitness, or to help champion sport and active leisure in whatever way they wish, although this is by no means a requirement.

Nomination forms are available online at www.york.gov.uk/eng-AGE or from libraries, Energise, Yearsley, sports clubs and other outlets. The closing date is Friday 30 August.
