Police investigating an assault in York during which a man was knocked unconscious have reissued their appeal for information.

As well as needing witnesses to come forward, officers have issued a specific appeal for a woman to contact them who was involved in a verbal altercation with the victim just before the assault.

The assault occurred between 2.05am and 2.15am in the early hours of Saturday morning (15 June 2013) during a disturbance involving a group of people on the Nessgate Corner of Spurriergate.

The victim, who was knocked unconscious after being punched and falling to the floor, remains in hospital undergoing treatment to a head injury.

Sergeant Wesley Cooper of York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “I am appealing to the woman who was with the group of people and was speaking to the victim just before the assault. A man remains in hospital and it’s vital that we speak to anyone who was present and can assist our investigation.”

During the disturbance, the victim, a 25-year-old man from the Widnes area, was punched, causing him to fall to the floor where he was unconscious for a period of time. He also sustained a wound to the back of his head which required hospital treatment.

A number of people were involved in the incident and some were seen to walk away from the scene.

Police want to hear from anyone who was in York city centre in the early hours of Saturday and witnessed the incident, or anyone else who has information which could assist the police investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for York police, or email Wesley.cooper@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
