St Leonard's Hospice
About Them
St Leonard's Hospice is an independent charity, providing specialist palliative care and support for local people with life limiting illnesses. The Hospice is made up of an In-patient Unit, Sunflower Centre and Hospice@Home service. Every patient is recognised and treated as an individual, and as a result are able to enjoy the best possible quality of life. Care also extends to support families and carers. St Leonard's care is free of charge to patients and their families but not free to provide. As a charity they rely heavily on the generosity of the public to raise over £5.2 million each year that it takes to run St Leonard's Hospice. This equates to £595 for every hour of every day. The St Leonard's charity shops help raise around half a million every year which is absolutely crucial in funding patient care at the Hospice. The St Leonard's Hospice charity shop on Ousegate in Selby opened on 14th February 2013 and, as well as raising vital funds for St Leonard's, has been a significant part of the Selby community ever since. The shop couldn't run without the loyal support of 16 active volunteers from the Selby area.
Why Should They Win?
The St Leonard's Hospice charity shop on Ousegate in Selby isn't your average charity shop. With the support of a creative shop manager, Carol, it has gone from strength to strength and has become a real hub within the community. Carol has developed a vintage emporium which started as a couple of bookshelves and now takes up a third of the shop. With this, she has generated a large customer base of vintage enthusiasts who visit regularly to see her curated collection of fabulous donated items. She now runs two vintage events per year which raise an additional £6000 for patient care at the Hospice. Carol, along with fantastic staff and volunteers, has created a genuine community feel with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Staff and volunteers have a real rapport with the community which includes lots of international customers. Carol has even begun learning some helpful Polish phrases! There is something for everyone in our Selby Ousegate shop. With stock refreshed regularly, there is always something new to see, and something to suit all tastes and budgets. The ethos of the shop reflects the ethos of St Leonard's Hospice; treating people as individuals and with respect.
