The Nominees

Ainsty York - Manchester Fundraiser

We are a thriving pub, restaurant, sports & live event venue . We are at the heart of our community and our pub is loved by many people. Our main comment received from many reviews is always how brilliant our staff are. We cater for all age groups and host many events from a prestigious talent contest where the winner received £1000 to the local musicians who love playing the Ainsty to tribute nights aimed at the ladies with a Rod Stewart tribute. We host our own yearly festival which most pubs simply could not host and we have raised thousands and thousands of pounds for local charities and we helped raise £9500 for The Klis Family Fund.

Why Should You Win?

I believe our event should win due to our community coming together after the effects of the Manchester bombings. When someone is york is hurt this is what people do and our pub was at the heart of it. We raised £9500 for The Klis Family who lost their parents on 22nd may in the bombing. The event was the busiest fundraiser we have ever been asked to do and we gained TV coverage from look north and calendar. I am biased but this event will go down in history as york supported its own

Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle is one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles; originally built as one of the finest and most luxurious homes in the land, the castle bears the scars of over 600 years of fascinating history. The castle is still in the private ownership of Lord Bolton, the direct descendant of the castle’s original owner Sir Richard le Scrope It is now a popular attraction for family days out, weddings, evening events, falconry experiences and tours as well as for school groups and even paranormal events.

Why Should You Win?

Bolton Castle is an outstanding visitor attraction. It is possibly one of the few places where you can really see, feel and smell how a medieval Castle used to be. We have been awarded an Outstanding by Trip Adviser in 2017, which is a repeat of last year. We continue to provide a memorable experience for all who visit from the very young to old. Popular for weddings and our falconry experiences as well as private dining and other public events. You can even come and try your hand at archery and see our wild boar at feeding time.

Can You Escape?

Can You Escape? is an exciting live escape game venue in the centre of York. Our escape games involve teams being ‘locked’ in a room for 60 minutes with a range of puzzles, clues and riddles to solve in order to successfully escape against the clock. A cross between the Crystal Maze and Cluedo, escape games are rapidly growing in popularity. They appeal to a wide range of visitors and encourage them to put their problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills to the test whilst having a lot of fun! We offer visitors two themed escape ‘missions’; Operation Lone Eagle and Operation HERO, each providing a different experience for between two and ten people. They are a fantastic activity to enjoy with friends, family and colleagues and we welcome groups celebrating anything from birthdays to team building activities and retirements! We are a fun, family-friendly attraction and our passion is to create memorable experiences for everyone. Whether a team escapes or not, they all have a great time.

Why Should You Win?

Can You Escape? is an exciting and unique attraction in York offering visitors of all ages a chance to have fun together. We pride ourselves on providing an interactive and immersive experience that turns everyday people into heroes. Our dedicated Games Masters ensure that each game is tailored to the teams playing. This means that children as young as 8 years old can take part, making them a popular option for family days out, celebrations and kids birthday parties. Our games can also be enjoyed up until 8.30pm providing entertainment after work or in the evening. We work hard to keep our attraction dynamic and fresh by regularly developing new games, with our newest mission, Operation HERO, having just launched this summer. HERO was created specifically with York in mind and is based on the city’s fictional superhero squad, Force Four. The game sees teams putting their skills to the test to free the superheroes and save the city! Since opening in 2016, we’ve won a Visit York Tourism Award for Best Newcomer and have a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for our consistently positive reviews. Visitors remember their experience at Can You Escape? long after they’ve left!

Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum

Housed in the buildings and grounds of an original WWII Prisoner of War camp, our unique museum transports visitors back in time to experience the sights, sounds and even the smells of life on both the Home Front and Front Line during World War Two. 2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of us first opening our gates to visitors, and we are confident in making the claim that we now present the most comprehensive exhibition and displays covering British military history of the 20th Century in the world. An all weather attraction that is disabled and dog friendly, we suggest an average visit length of 3 to 4 hours to explore our 7 acre site. Access to the Childrens Junior Assault Course and wartime Music Hall puppet show are included in the admission price and free on-site car parking is also provided. We host a number of varied Special Event days and weekends during the year, everything from Living History weekends where you might bump into a British Tommy, German 1st World War soldier or Spiv with his Black Market merchandise, to military parades and reunions where we welcome three generations of HM Forces to come together, pay tribute and remember comrades and friends.

Why Should You Win?

We are confident in making the claim that we present the most comprehensive display of it's kind in the world in a historically relevant and unique setting. Also fairly unique in the world of museums is the fact that we are family owned and run, and that all that we have achieved has been done without help, financial or otherwise, from national, regional or local Government or council, the Lottery or as a result of tax breaks or Grants. We provide a significant educational resource in the North of England and an average of 30,000 schoolchildren pass through our gates on an annual basis. "..an hour spent at Eden Camp is worth 10 hours in the classroom with regards to bringing the subject to life and getting children enthusiastic for the subject.." is a common comment that we hear from visiting teachers. Now in our 30th year of opening, our admission prices have only risen by £5.00 in all that time. As a family owned and run museum we believe in providing a value for money experience that can be enjoyed by all the family, and our display and exhibitions help to bring families together to discuss their own family histories.

The inspiration for the event was to turn the negative view of the Micklegate Run Pub Crawl into a more positive perception of Micklegate by holding the Micklegate Run Soapbox Challenge, whilst bringing extra revenue onto Micklegate and into York with over £600,00 spent in the city in 2016 by some of the 16,000 people who lined our street watching this Family Event. St Leonard's Hospice Midnight Walk

St Leonard’s Hospice is an independent charity providing specialist palliative care and support for local people with life-limiting illnesses. We have an In-patient Unit, Sunflower Centre and Hospice@Home service. In this relaxed and friendly environment, every patient is recognised and treated as an individual. With our support, patients are able to enjoy the best possible quality of life. Our care also extends to support families and carers. In addition to a team of highly experienced doctors and nurses, we have specialists in a wide range of roles including complementary therapy, lymphoedema care, physiotherapy, social work, bereavement, occupational therapy and spiritual care. Our care is free of charge to patients and their families but not free to provide. As a charity we rely heavily on the generosity of the public to help raise just over £5 million that it costs to run St Leonard’s Hospice each year. This equates to £574 for every hour of every day. Although St Leonard’s does get some public funding, this would only fund the Hospice until mid-April, after which point the annual running costs rely on donations, events, fundraising and support from the local community.

Why Should You Win?

Harry 'Hometime' and Minster FM kept people entertained from 9pm, and Thomas of ‘Clubbercise’ led a warm up that got everyone raring to glow at midnight. Arriving back in the early hours, walkers were greeted by cheers and a well-earned bacon sandwich and cup of tea! The York Dungeon

For 31 years, The York Dungeon has brought the darker parts of York’s past to life. Today, it is an interactive journey through some of the city’s most famous stories and infamous characters. You’ll walk through 10 live shows, featuring real actors, immersive sets and some hilarious & scary surprises. It is all based on real history (minus the boring bits) where you come face-to-face with sinister characters from York's 2000 years of history. You’ll meet the Viking warrior, Snore Shortsword, who will tell you all about the worst methods of torture and death that the Norsemen delivered to their enemies; take a seat in the Plague Doctor’s surgery, and learn how the Plague was cured, and how it killed; say hello to Guy Fawkes, and find out what really happened on the 5th of November; and survive an encounter with Dick Turpin, the most notorious Highwayman in English history. The York Dungeon is a fully themed experience. That means 360° sets, full of authenticity and theatrical storytelling; these are sets that you’ll see, hear and even smell!

Here at The York Dungeon we just think we are BLOODY brilliant, and we’re not the only ones; just ask the 87% of visitors who rated us Very Good to Excellent on Trip Advisor why we’re the scariest fun in York (and ask the other 13% why they hate having fun)! We bring York’s history to life (and death) in ways no other attraction does; whether you’re laughing or screaming, you’ll still learn something new about this historic city. But don’t think we just twiddle our thumbs in the meantime, every year we bring new shows and stories to the people of York, from the darker side of the Vikings, to the horrible habits of Dick Turpin. Each show involves realistic costumes & make-up, immersive sets, terrifying special effects and a couple of blood curdling surprises for good measure, not to mention some of the most talented actors this side of Yorkshire. We’ve been doing this for 30 years, telling the untold stories of Guy Fawkes, the Plague, the ghosts of the Golden Fleece and the tortures of the Castle Prison. Without us, York’s history just wouldn’t be as exciting, and those who ignore history, are doomed to repeat it!
