The Talbot Hotel

The Talbot Hotel, Malton has long been an important hotel serving both locals and visitors to the area. The building was originally under monastic ownership. In 1739 it was purchased by Sir Thomas Wentworth, ancestor of the Fitzwilliam/Naylor-Leyland families. Having fallen into disrepair under lease, the Fitzwilliam Estate (Naylor-Leyland) took over the grade II* listed building in 2011. Over £4m was invested to provide a quality 26 bedroom hotel serving outstanding food.

Why Should You Win?

The Talbot Hotel should win the best pub or bar award because we support numerous local businesses and are passionate about doing so. From the moment you walk in to the bar you are able to see the various different drink selections we have to offer from all around Ryedale, and Yorkshire itself displayed on our shelves. For example the beer we offer on tap is brewed just 0.1 miles from our front doorstep - that is as fresh as you can get! A selection of the gins we serve include Raisthorpe, Slingsby and Hedgerow, the latter is distilled in Malton. The team working behind the bar are extremely passionate in their knowledge of what drinks accompany and compliment certain dishes within the hotel's restaurants, and are always keen to learn more about the journey of the offerings we have in our bar.

THOR'S tipi bar

THOR’S tipi bar was launched in 2015 to re-imagine Christmas - creating a unique Nordic Winter Wonderland, nestled in the heart of York. Two linked canvas tipis form the bar, festooned with lighting and decked out with wooden tables and benches, cosy furs and a fire pit. An outdoor heated area allows customers to soak up the festival atmosphere whilst watching the hustle and bustle around them. Local breweries serve lagers and draft ales including Thor’s Thunder guest beer. Mulled wine, hot cider and a fully licensed bar ensures there is something to warm everyone's cockles. A hot chocolate station allowed kids, big and small, to choose a topping for their homemade chocolate treat. We work with Shambles Kitchen and Donut Kitchen for our food offering. Both companies are well-established businesses that have worked in the city centre for years and their following proves their excellence. THOR’S became a brand and the team worked hard to ensure that the brand and its beliefs were expressed through all channels. From the quality of the local produce sourced, to the training of the staff, THOR’S became a destination that got the whole town talking.

Why Should You Win?

THOR’S tipi bar, due to return for its third year, is unique in that it offers the only dwelling space within the Christmas market, giving the shoppers somewhere to relax with an open fire and cosy furs. Understanding York’s visitors and heritage was a key factor in the design and concept of THOR’S. Produced by two local Yorkshire companies, we insisted on using local producers and suppliers, in keeping with our local theme. Working with local suppliers, Shambles Kitchen and Donut Kitchen was key to making sure the products were high end but not high in price. We understand that not everyone eats meat or drinks alcohol and special items were added to the menu to accommodate for all tastes. Finding a local brewery was important too and we worked with Brew York and Brass Castle from Malton - given we sold 24,000 pints in total, we think we chose well. Using a non-intimidating security company that became part of the team all added to the feeling you were being welcomed into a family-friendly, safe establishment. Getting customer satisfaction was key to us, we spent valuable time with our customers in the bar to gain their thoughts, to reading and responding to all social media comments. We spent time training our staff on the values of THOR’S – how to speak, where the event derived from, why we picked our suppliers and all of these little touches helped to make a customer experience that bit more special.
