Cyclesense

Cyclesense was born in 1991, fulfilling the childhood dream of David Stainthorpe. Dave had always wanted a bike shop, as a child he used to take bikes apart, swap bits and sell them to his friends. Slowly, but surely, Dave built the business up starting in his garage at home in Thorner and trading on Dewsbury Market with just £600 worth of stock. By 1995 Cyclesense had become very well established. Its reputation built on value and service. The markets were very cold so Dave decided that it was time to move to some proper retail premises. Cyclesense moved to Tadcaster, the home of Samuel Smiths, John Smiths and Coors breweries. Our first proper shop was 500sqft and at the time had more than enough room for Dave. Business blossomed in Tadcaster and soon Paul Stainthorpe (Dave’s oldest) joined the business. The years flew by and during this time Dave and Paul built a loyal customer base as word got round of their friendly and knowledgeable little shop. Cyclesense moved to its current location on Tadcaster High Street in 2001. To date, Cyclesense is the biggest independent retailer in Tadcaster, with 3000 sqft of sales area and a large (free) car park at the rear of the shop. At Cyclesense we stock a tremendous range of bikes that often astounds visitors to the shop. There really is a bike to suit all riders. Mountain, Road, Sports-Hybrids, Commuting, Touring, Tandems, Trikes, Unicycles and all sizes of children’s bikes.

Why Should You Win?

We should win because we are a survivor, we have survived through very difficult trading conditions when many others in our sector have fallen by the wayside. We listen to our customers and work hard to provide a unique offer for them. We have survived by cutting our cloth according to trading conditions, we have always kept costs to a minimum and are always looking to reduce them further, I work full time in the business and my wife assists with the accounts and paperwork even though she works full time for another business. This is a hard fact of business life today there are no magic carpets to success, keep your head down ,work hard , and continue to plough everything back into the business to keep it going.

Hunters of Helmsley

Husband and wife team Chris and Christine Garnett have owned the Hunters of Helmsley deli for 10 years, but it has been trading for 27. An icon in the town, and the wider region, no trip to Helmsley is complete without a visit. Hunters won the accolade of Britain’s Best Small Shop in 2015, beating off competition from hundreds of other retailers. Awarding them their prize at the House of Commons, Simon Danczuk MP, said: "Hunters of Helmsley was chosen by the judges for its local sourcing of produce, organisation of events to support their high street and their use of social media to engage customers." From its characterful Grade 2 listed building, to its unusually wide selection of products, Hunters is an Aladdin’s Cave of food and drink. Chris and Christine take an active role in the running of the shop, with Chris manning the downstairs fresh food side of the deli, and Christine upstairs, with its huge range of jams, chutney, tea and coffee, international delicacies, ingredients, and chocolates. The couple both come from farming backgrounds and believe the quality of food and where/how it is produced is essential. Of the products in store 70% are sourced locally.

Why Should You Win?

• The staff – Several employees have worked there for 10+ years. They go out of their way to help. • Supporting local producers - It’s vital to the Hunters’ philosophy that local farmers, producers and suppliers are supported/championed. • Tastings - regular tastings and special events are held in store – e.g. a nutritionist offering advice on food allergies/intolerances. • Innovative marketing – Hunters approached two local producers – Yorkshire Baker/Ampleforth Abbey – to create a brand new pie for British Pie Week, which is sold exclusively at Hunters. The deli worked with local firms to create a stunning cake reproduction of the shop, which was sold by the slice for a local charity and an 8.5kg Easter egg, raffled to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. • New ideas - To mark the Olympic Games, a special ‘Bauru’ sandwich was created to give customers a taste of Brazil. 2017’s International Beer Day saw Hunters introduce a Ginger Beer float for the first time. • Part of the community - Hunters takes an active role in making sure Helmsley stays a thriving town. In 2012 Chris and Christine instigated the forming of ‘Helmsley in Business’ (HiB) which now has over 60 member businesses, working together to promote the town.

Why Should You Win?

Its been a very trying time. I set up this business 2 years ago, it was so exciting and terrifying at the same time. When everything suddenly started moving forward I fell pregnant but decided to keep going. 10 weeks into opening the shop we were flooded out on boxing day, losing everything. I made the decision I couldn't go through all that again and wouldn't re open. My partner told me to sleep on it. I woke up and though, I'm not going to be beaten and from there stuff started moving and we re-opened a year ago. Its been such hard work, being a mum to a 6yr old and 17month old, running the business and home life. Its worrying knowing that this could all happen again.

Spears
Travels
The team at Spear Travels in Stokesley (Lynsey, Caroline, Lisa, Siobhan, Kath, Katy and Ruth) are totally committed to providing industry leading service to every customer when booking their travel and holiday arrangements.  Holidays are one of the largest financial commitments a household will make in a year, therefore our attention to detail is essential to ensure that everyone gets the break that they deserve and that all the arrangements, often extremely complex, are handled professionally and with care.  As a truly independent retailer we are not directed by head office to only promote and sell holidays that generate the greatest financial return for the business – we work closely with our customers to perfectly match their requirements and budget to the product that best suits their requirement.  We work with over 300 UK Tour Operators – considerably more than the national high street chains (who primarily will only sell their in-house brands) – and our friendly staff are well trained, well-travelled and well known in the local community and are always prepared to go the extra mile for our customers.

Why Should You Win?

Spear Travels in Stokesley is a true community retailer.  We support and attend the annual Stokesley show with our fun filled Spear Travels marquee tent welcoming customers, old and new, to meet the team and the company Directors and one lucky winner can win a £200 holiday voucher by participating in our free to enter holiday themed competition.  We like to bring interesting and varied Tour Operators to the town and meet our customers ‘in person’ and have recently welcomed a Prosecco Bike courtesy of Italian specialist Citalia, held an Afternoon Tea with Regent Seven Seas Cruises and, not forgetting, our luxury travel evening with Carrier attended by over 50 interested travellers.  Spear Travels has won several national British Travel Awards for ‘Best Customer Service’ – the only travel retailer to win this prestigious award 3 years running, and we would so love to be recognised for our continued help, advice and support for the lovely folk in and around Stokesley.
