KlearEars

I'm Dr Aaron Brown, a GP In York. During my training I saw an area where the NHS was just overstretched and patients were suffering. This was with blocked ears. Earwax problems are so common but the NHS has bigger fish to fry with important cancer treatments that earwax doesn't get a big piece of the budget. I therefore set my mind to designing a system that could be used in an office / GP room which was the same technique but cheaper by using innovative equipment. I got a working system going and patients love it. I provide the service out of Stonegate Medical Clinic but been trying to get the system into the NHS to improve patient care and reduce costs for the NHS so they can use the saving in other areas such as important cancer treatments. I submitted my KlearEars project to NHS England and, after heavy scrutinizing (felt like Dragons Den!) they have appointed me to the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme starting in August this year.

Why Should You Win?

I have not had the easiest time with my own health as I have Cystic Fibrosis which is an incurable genetic condition affecting the lungs and digestive system. When I was born I was given the life expectancy of 30 and I passed that 2 years ago. To landmark my 30th I asked for no presents or cards but people to donate to the CF Trust and we raised over £2000. I've never let it stand in my way but used it as a driver to achieve. I was the first person ever with CF to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I have therefore always felt indebted to our amazing NHS and wanted to give back to it as it has helped me so greatly. That's why I became a doctor and that is why I set up KlearEars to improve the service for patients and save money for the NHS as it is sorely needed now more than ever.

Malton CIC

Malton CIC is a not for profit organisation working with and for the community to promote Malton as ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’ and improve community spirit. The CIC own and operate a number of car parks in Malton town centre offering two hours free parking to boost the local economy. The CIC organises and subsidises the ‘Malton in Bloom’ project and also supports a great number of local groups and charities with donations. The CIC offers practical help to organisations wishing to run events in Malton by hosting events on our land, helping with PR and providing power supplies, etc. In the past 12 months the CIC launched the phenomenally successful ‘Made in Malton food tours’, which run several times a month and the equally successful ‘Street Food Sunday’ events across the summer months, stimulating Sunday trade in the town with a family friendly al-fresco dining experience.

Why Should You Win?

Nine years ago Malton was much like many other small market towns, it was suffering from a terminal decline in local business as shopping moved online and to large out of town shopping complexes. Given that Malton sits in a rural area with farming and food production at its historical heart, Tom Naylor Leyland decided to concentrate on food production as a USP for Malton. Through his family estate of buildings in town Tom decided to create opportunities for artisan food producers to help them step up from home kitchens into purpose built production units and shops. A food festival was launched quickly followed by monthly food markets. Celebrity chefs supported the initiative and in fact it was Antonio Carluccio who decided to call Malton ‘Yorkshire's Food Capital’. This inspirational slogan is now a tangible reality with a marked increase in food businesses opening here in recent years. The success of the local food industry has also stimulated success for non-food and service businesses, as a result, Malton’s economy is once again healthy and perhaps more importantly sustainable. The annual ‘Food Lovers Festival’ attracts 30,000 people and that one event alone generates an estimated £500,000 for the local economy.

Why Should You Win?

This landmark Grade II listed building has been given a new lease of life through the extraordinary vision of Springfield Healthcare CEO Graeme Lee and an extensive team of architects (Norr), builders (Simpsons of York) and restoration specialists. The £10M restoration of the practically derelict site has delivered a superb Care Village for the citizens of York and the surrounding area as well as providing over 100 new jobs and training opportunities for young people. The building places the elderly generation at the front of the development in contrast to traditional further back sites. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said when he opened the Chocolate Works Care Village in June 2017 “The health of any society is measured by how we care for our most vulnerable people. What I have seen here demonstrates that our society has the potential for the wellbeing and flourishing of all older people. This care home is a beacon of hope for all those who are getting older and a re-assurance for their families.”

Spears Travels

The team at Spear Travels in Helmsley (Sam, Judith, Stacey and Ruth) are passionate people – passionate about Helmsley. Located in Market Place, Spear Travels offers the folk of Helmsley and surrounding areas a wealth of travel industry experience and knowledge when planning their holiday and travel arrangements. As a truly independent retailer we are not directed by head office to only promote and sell holidays that generate the greatest financial return for the business – we work closely with our customers to perfectly match their requirements and budget to the product that best suits their requirement. We work with over 300 UK Tour Operators – considerably more than the national high street chains (who primarily will only sell their in-house brands) – and our friendly staff are well trained, well-travelled and well known in the local community and are always prepared to go the extra mile for our customers.

Who Should You Win?

Spear Travels in Helmsley is a true community retailer and support numerous local initiatives including our annual participation and attendance at the Ryedale Show with the fun-filled Spear Travels marquee tent where customers, old and new, can meet the staff along with the company directors and participate in our free to enter holiday competition to win a £200 voucher towards a forthcoming holiday.  In addition to hosting our annual travel show at The Feathers Hotel, we have recently invited local school children in to the branch to learn about being a travel agent (which we hope will help them with geography lessons back in class).  Ruth recently participated in a Travel Trade Crusade across 3 European countries wearing fancy dress whilst raising much needed funds for cancer charities.  Spear Travels nationally raised over £4,000 thanks to the generosity of our customers.  We regularly host travel events where customers can ‘meet the Operators’ and talk about their personal holiday plans – which we hope will provide the inspiration often needed to try something different.    Nothing is too much trouble for us when booking holidays and travel and if you haven’t sampled our welcome and service yet, then what’s stopping you?  The kettle is always on!   Spear Travels has won several national British Travel Awards for ‘Best Customer Service’ – the only travel retailer to win this prestigious award 3 years running, and we would love to be recognised for our continued help, advice and support for the lovely folk in and around Helmsley.

Tadcrafters

Tadcrafters support a range of charities and worthy causes whilst promoting craft skills. We have been involved in lots of projects that have helped local people and many other communities too.

We are probably best known for decorating Tadcaster with bunting for the Tour de Yorkshire 2017, but over the last year we have made and given away lots of other things, mostly re-using and recycling donated fabric and knitting yarn which might otherwise have gone to waste. We make twiddlemuffs for people with dementia, and supported the York Hospital Dementia Appeal, we have knitted clothing for premature babies for Leeds and York Hospitals, as well as for Syrian refugees in Greece and projects in Gambia. We sew personal effects bags for St. Leonard’s Hospice and York Hospital and support Days for Girls by making feminine hygiene kits so that girls in developing countries can attend school. We are in the process of contributing about 5000 knitted poppies to support the WW1 centenary commemorations at Selby Abbey next year and we have collected nearly 900 “gently worn” bras for “Smalls for All”.

Why should you win?

Tadcrafters take unwanted items and turn them into something useful using skills in the community that are often undervalued. This reduces waste, builds self-esteem and makes a real difference to people’s lives.

All our members are volunteers who benefit from learning and sharing new skills whilst also seeing the positive difference they can make to the world around them.

The things we have made have made such positive differences to the lives of many people but our volunteers are also benefitting.  Most just want to “make a difference” but many also find that supporting Tadcrafters helps them tackle loneliness, anxiety or depression by being in a social network and learning new skills.

Over the last year we have made many links with different organisations allowing us to share information and identify services which could be useful to members of the community. Many worthy causes have benefitted from our work and we have raised awareness and empathy for many issues locally and worldwide.
