Tudor York
York in Tudor times was a difficult and often dangerous place to be. With its wool industry already in decline, York lost its privileged political position with the death of its patron Richard III. It became a hotbed of civil unrest, conspiracy and rebellion against the Tudor throne. Uncomfortable with the changes of the Reformation, the city then had to cope with the disastrous impact of the Dissolution. This course looks at York in the context of national events: the fall of Richard III, the Yorkshire Rebellion of 1489, the Pilgrimage of Grace of 1536, and the Northern Revolt of 1569. We study religious changes of the time and local resistance to them, as exemplified by Margaret Clitheroe. We also look at economic and social developments, and the changing topography of York. We'll view these events and issues through a range of contemporary sources, considering their nature and purpose, to help us get a better understanding of the Tudors, the city of York, and its people.

Planning a Novel
In this 9 week course we will consider the elements a good novel needs and use these as a basis for planning our own novels. Each week we will focus on a particular aspect of novel writing such as beginnings, endings, characterisation, dialogue, point of view and storytelling techniques. We will undertake fun writing activities that will help us generate and develop our ideas as well as hone our skills. We will also look at planning and the all important self-editing process. Finally we will consider ways of weaving all the threads together so that a massive undertaking becomes a more manageable task.
