In the Footsteps of Robert Davies: 150 Years through the History of York
During the mid-19th century, Robert Davies developed a series of ‘virtual’ walks through York, published in 1880. We join him on his imaginary rambles, finding out what has – and hasn’t – changed since he wrote, how and why, using photographs, writings and maps to discover more about the past and present city. A walk around York may be offered as an alternative option one week if students wish.

Page to Painting: Literary Influences on Artists
This course will explore the ways in which artists of different periods have been influenced by literary themes - fully illustrated, with discussion. Whilst a range of different periods will be included there will be a concentration on the work of Victorian artists (such as J.W. Waterhouse) representing their interest in this area. The Pre-Raphaelite artists' work was dominated by literary themes, such as Tennyson's epic poem 'The Lady of Shallot'. Shakespeare's plays were of interest to 18th & 19th century artists. Renaissance artists' works were dominated by Biblical themes, these established visual conventions will be compared to later interpretations by 19th & 20th century artists. There will also be a comparison between the approaches of Renaissance & Victorian artists to mythological themes.

Drawing and Painting
Join a friendly and supportive group where the intention is to help each student produce increasingly confident and personal work. Students attend with varying levels of experience: each student works at their own level and beginners receive plenty of encouragement. Roughly two thirds of each lesson is spent drawing or painting. There are also demonstrations and discussions. You can expect some one-to-one tuition in most sessions. The course includes: explaining the mysteries of how to draw something that 'looks right' and practising techniques that can help; mixing colours; using acrylic paint; experimenting with mixed media effects; discussing what our work expresses and how it is influenced by Western art and the art of other cultures. Sometimes a step-by-step approach is used but students are also encouraged to think for themselves rather than simply following instructions to achieve a finished product. It should be possible to produce one or two finished pictures during the term.
