Tudor York
York in Tudor times was a difficult and often dangerous place to be. With its wool industry already in decline, York lost its privileged political position with the death of its patron Richard III. It became a hotbed of civil unrest, conspiracy and rebellion against the Tudor throne. Uncomfortable with the changes of the Reformation, the city then had to cope with the disastrous impact of the Dissolution. This course looks at York in the context of national events: the fall of Richard III, the Yorkshire Rebellion of 1489, the Pilgrimage of Grace of 1536, and the Northern Revolt of 1569. We study religious changes of the time and local resistance to them, as exemplified by Margaret Clitheroe. We also look at economic and social developments, and the changing topography of York. We'll view these events and issues through a range of contemporary sources, considering their nature and purpose, to help us get a better understanding of the Tudors, the city of York, and its people.

Yorkshire Saints and Holy Places
This course will look at the lives and places of pilgrimage associated with Saints John of Beverley, John of Bridlington, Aelred of Rievaulx, Hilda of Whitby, Wilfred of Ripon, William of York, John Fisher and Margaret Clitherow. Taking as our starting point the social and historical context in which these saints lived and died, we shall read extracts from various lives of these saints as well as looking at their representation in the visual arts such as manuscripts and stained glass windows. In looking at the shrines and places of pilgrimage associated with these saints we shall explore their spiritual legacy in order to reach a deeper understanding of what we understand by sainthood and sanctity.
