| Alex's life in radio began at a station in Gloucester, employed illegally from the age of fourteen. Jobs there included doing exciting things like taking an inventory of microphone stands, answering the Lost Pet Line and giving himself a hernia moving a grand piano on his own (all true). As the son of a Yorkshireman, the homing instinct soon kicked in and Alex came to Leeds University in 1994 where he landed his first radio show on Leeds Student Radio. Being a wacky student type at the time with massive hair, the show comprised of lots off-the-wall studenty features such as 'Rude Word Of The Day' and 'Soups Of Our Lifetime'. In an attempt to earn some extra beer money, he also got some work with the AA reading travel news for radio stations across the North of England. Whilst there, the boss of one of Minster FM's sister stations heard him, and after an embroidered promotional bomber jacket became free, Alex made his move full time into presenting. When he joined Minster FM in January 2003, he initially worked as a respectable journalist and newsreader. But unfortunately having to dress smart for the role quickly took its toll. The serious chaffing from his collar and tie meant that a more relaxed, casual job was the only option, and so Alex was put on the afternoon show. Years later and he's still here, now on earlier in the day, but still playing the songs and having the occasional Victor Meldrew style rant. Outside radio, and Alex cites his interests as fell running, macrame, and playing the oboe but those were only put on his CV to bump the length up a bit. He does quite like walking though - to the kettle mostly to make lots of tea, as Minster FM's answer to Mrs Doyle. Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on... listen to his show. Don't forget if you ever hear a song repeated during Alex's show and you're the first person to call we'll give you £100 as part of our No Repeat Workday. Plus there's another chance to win after 10 each morning as Alex plays "Older, Younger or Dead." Get the celebrity ages in order and you'll win a giant pizza from Pizza Hut at Monks Cross. |
