York Women Take To The Streets To Raise Money For St Leonard's Hospice
6:01am 8th June 2013
Women in York will be taking to the streets tonight dressed in grass skirts and Hawaiian leis. It's part of a midnight walk to raise essential funds for St Leonards Hospice:
Sue Miller from St Leonard's Hospice says: "Last year our Midnight Walk raised a staggering £88,000, this year, our aim is to smash that figure! It costs £9,600 each and every day to continue providing care and support to those in our community facing a life threatening illness."
Sue and the team from St Leonard's are asking the women taking part to arrive early, soak up the atmosphere and get in the party mood. Palm trees and sandy shores may be far away but they will be bringing the tropics to you with their Hawaiian Beach Party. Sue adds that, once again there will be a large illuminated dedication screen where you can display your own personal message.
There is a choice of two routes – 10 miles for those up for a challenge or a more gentle 5 mile route, both starting and finishing at York College, Sim Balk Lane. Sue says that if you would like to take part but not quite sure that you can go the distance, marshals will be on hand throughout the route to get you back to base where warm drinks and bacon butties will be waiting.
Sue says that whether you are walking in memory of a friend or loved one, as a way of keeping fit or simply to do something a little different tonight, that you will of course be generating vital funds for St Leonard's Hospice.
