police

4:20pm 10th May 2013

Detectives in York are appealing for witnesses following a robbery in the city.

It occurred just after 12.30pm on Friday 10 May 2013, on the River Foss towpath at Foss Islands, near to Majestic Wines, when a man grabbed a handbag from the victim.

When the 54-year-old local woman tried to resist, he hit her, knocking her to the ground before stealing the distinctive green handbag.

As a result of the incident the victim was left with minor injuries and shock.

Following the robbery, the man got on a bike which had been left a short distance away and rode towards the Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The man is described as white, aged in his twenties, with a slim build and around 5ft 7in tall. At the time he was wearing a dark coloured top and trousers. The bike he used is black.

Detective Sergeant Mark Jackson, of York CID, said: “Thankfully the victim has not been seriously injured. However, it could have been far worse and she has been left very shaken and upset by this nasty incident.

“I urge anyone who can help to identify the man responsible for this robbery to come forward immediately and contact the police or Crimestoppers.”

Anyone who can assist with this investigation is urged to contact York CID on 101, select option 2 and ask for Mark Jackson. Alternatively information can be emailed to yorkcid@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.

Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference number  12130074841.
