York remains one of the top cycling cities in the UK, supported by figures released by the Department for Transport this week, which ranks York as the third best cycling city in England.

The number of adults cycling once a week in York has increased from 23 per cent in 2010/11 to 25 per cent in 2011/12, ranking York nationally in the top five cycling cities. This is an increase of two per cent from 2010/11 figures when York was ranked fourth.

Figures also demonstrate that York has the third highest proportion of adults who cycle at least five times per a week with 10 per cent.

Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, Said: “These figures cement the fact that York is one of the top cycling cities in England. I hope that the amount of people cycling will continue to rise with the recent announcement that the National Circuit Race Championships will be held in York on 21 July and with Stage 2 of the 2014 Tour de France starting in York.”

British Cycling announced on Wednesday 17 April that the 2013 Men’s and Women’s National Circuit Race Championships will be held in York on 21 July 2013. This is the same day that the 100th Tour de France will draw to a close and the baton will be passed to Yorkshire where the 2014 Le Grand Depart will be taking place. York is hosting the start of Stage 2.
