Energy Saving Scheme in Pocklington and Market Weighton
8:37am 8th April 2013
Households interested in saving on their energy bills have until the end of today, Monday, 8 April to register for East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s YORSwitch scheme, with almost 13,000 households already signed up.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council says the figure is encouraging and is the equivalent of nine per cent of the East Riding’s 140,000 households signing up. They add that of the 13,000 more than 50 per cent are from households occupied by somebody aged 60 or over and more than 20 per cent of registrants are from low-income households.
The scheme works by households registering their interest followed by an online auction between energy suppliers, with the winning supplier’s best offer made available to residents, says the council. They add that the scheme is open to anyone, not just those residing in the East Riding.
Following the registration deadline on Monday, an online auction, between energy suppliers, taking place on Tuesday, 9 April, says East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The council say that after the auction, an offer letter will be sent out to those who registered detailing the winning energy supplier’s offer. Residents then have time to consider the offer, they add and decide if it is right for them. If it is, then all the resident needs to do is respond to the offer letter and then the energy supplier will set up their new energy deal which is fixed for 12 months, say the council.
With just today left, the council is keen for even more households to sign up, as the more households that register the greater the buying power of YORSwitch and the greater the savings.
Councillor Symon Fraser, cabinet portfolio holder for environment, housing and planning at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The council and its partners are really pleased at the take up of YORSwitch, with those signed up representing a sixth of registrations for these schemes nationally.
“Switching energy suppliers is something that many of us never get round to doing or it can seem too daunting and complicated, but, based on the savings achieved in a similar auction, residents could save up to £400,000 in total, collectively, on their energy bills next year.
“The YORSwitch scheme makes switching energy suppliers really easy and the simplest way to register is online, with all the information you need to register available from your current energy bill.”
