Thirsk Carers Group Celebrates 25 Years

A Thirsk based group that has been caring for the community for the last 25 years is rolling out the red carpet in June.
As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations Thirsk Carers Support is hosting a special supper – and wants to bring together as many carers and volunteers together as possible.
The June 14 event is open to anyone that has had connections with the group over the last 25 years – from the carers themselves to the volunteers who give respite support to carers, perhaps by sitting with a relative or friend.
The group – which is part of the Thirsk Community Care Association - is staging a ceilidh and supper at Thirsk Town Hall.
June Northridge has been a volunteer for the past 20 years getting involved because she was new to the area and wanted to make friends and do something useful.. One of her recent roles was to support carer Sonia Stanforth, sitting with her husband Edgar up until his death last year.
“Rather than sitting in the house alone while my husband was at work wanted to do something useful and make friends at the same time,” she said. “It is so rewarding – I have so many friends and it’s a lovely feeling to feel needed. I would recommend it to anyone.”
And Volunteer Co-ordinator, Gill Burn, added: ““I am extremely proud of our volunteer’s achievements , some of whom have been with us from the start. The commitment and dedication they show has enabled us to grow and be one of the stalwart projects of the Thirsk Community Care Association.”
