University of York Wins Award for Careers Advice

University of York

4:32pm 21st March 2013

The University of York’s Careers team was highly commended at the AGR Development Awards 2013 for the Best Preparation for Work Initiative in Higher Education.

The new award, presented by the Association of Graduate Recruiters, recognises York’s online Employability Tutorial as an innovative and highly valuable resource in preparing students effectively for the world of work.

Led by the Careers Education, Advice and Guidance team, the tutorial was developed in support of the University Student Employability Strategy, which aims to ensure that every York student benefits from the highest standard of support for their personal and career development.

Since its introduction, the tutorial has been rolled out to York students at all stages, with a tailored version available for Masters and PhD students.

Liz Smith, Director of Careers, said:  “The initiative started in 2011 and less than two years later we have a resource that students are using in their thousands.  It motivates students to think about the skills and experiences they need for their future, the opportunities available to them and how they can make sure that they are in a position to succeed.”

Throughout the tutorial, students are encouraged to make the most of their time, reflecting on their strengths and weaknesses, and what they can do to gain knowledge and experience through opportunities such as Careers networking events, skills courses, internships and volunteering activities.

Alex D'Albertanson, a second year History student, said: “The tutorial is comprehensive and easy-to-use.  I feel more confident in understanding what I have to offer and how best to use my time at York to develop myself further. It’s also helped me research and apply for relevant job and internship opportunities.”
