Easingwold Teenager Wins St John's Ambulance Award

Charlotte Swan 070313

2:49pm 7th March 2013

Charlotte Swan from York has been named as the St John Ambulance Cadet of the Year for the central district of the North East region.

Charlotte, 16, from Easingwold, will represent her fellow Cadets at events throughout the district during 2013. She will also encourage more young people to learn first aid and be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

Charlotte has been a cadet for three years and has been on hand to offer first aid at several sporting and social events including the Olympic torch relay at York Racecourse last year. She also came to the aid of her sister recently by raising her hand and applying pressure when she cut her finger badly.

As well as actively providing first aid at many events across York, she is working towards the charity’s Grand Prior award which marks at least three years of sustained effort studying 24 different subjects - from using social media and working in the community, to outdoor pursuits and first aid.

Charlotte said she was delighted to be the district Cadet of the Year: ‘It's a great honour and I am delighted to be representing all the other cadets in central district at regional and national level. I firmly believe that anyone, whatever age, can learn first aid and would like to see more young people like me learning the skills that can save a life.

‘St John Ambulance can teach you how to save someone’s life but being a member also helps you develop leadership and other skills that can be used in everyday life.

‘Being a St John Ambulance cadet is exciting and has enabled me to make new friends. It’s great to know that I am a member of an organisation that I can be part of for the rest of my life and I’m also giving something back to my local community."

Philip O’Donnell, St John Ambulance Regional Youth Manager said: ‘Charlotte is a great example of a dedicated volunteer who truly believes in the difference that first aid can make to saving someone’s life.

‘She is a great advocate for St John Ambulance and is exactly the kind of person we are looking for to lead Cadets in the district and region. I am sure she will have a fantastic year and really make the most of all the opportunities it offers her.’

St John Ambulance has opportunities for anyone aged 5 upwards. For more information call 08700 104950 or visit the website at www.sja.org.uk
