Nominations are being welcomed by City of York Council for the city’s annual Adult Learners Awards to celebrate the achievements of people who are taking their studies to a higher level.

The Awards are open to anyone undertaking further education or training of any type, whether for qualifications, work or leisure. Shortlisted candidates, together with their tutor and the person who nominated them, will be invited to a prestigious Adult Learners Award ceremony in York on Thursday 23 May.

The awards have been jointly organised by a number of adult learning organisations in York who wish celebrate the amazing achievements of adult learners over 18 years old. City of York Council, the University of York, York College, York St John University, Higher York and the Worker’s Educational Association (WEA) are amongst those who want to recognise the success of students, pupils and learners through this award scheme.

Thousands of adults undertake further education or training in York every year taking advantage of learning opportunities ranging from full-time educational courses to hour-long, weekly evening classes.

This year there are eight categories of awards which celebrate formal and informal learning whether through courses, work or community-based opportunities.

The award categories are:

  • Higher York award
  • Most improved learner / biggest achievement
  • Creative learner of the year
  • Learning through work
  • Learning through health and well-being
  • Learning through science and technology
  • Community learner
  • Older learner of the year.

Councillor Janet Looker, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People's Services said: “These awards recognise the hard work and personal dedication that so many people put into their study throughout the year. Whether the adult education is for career progression, personal improvement or simple pleasure, a large number of people in York are reaping the benefits of learning beyond school.

“These awards form part of Adult Learners Week which starts on Monday 20 May, and which is all about celebrating achievement and making people aware about the adult education opportunities available to everyone aged over 18. Many of us know someone who is learning in some form or another, so please take a few minutes to nominate them for an award. This year we hope to attract a record number of nominations and recognise the efforts of more people than ever before.”

Nominations are invited from tutors, learners, friends, family, clubs, associations and the general public. Forms are available from receptions at educational establishments, learning venues, libraries or online at www.yortime.org or (01904) 552817. The closing date for entries is Sunday 31 March.

Anyone wanting to find out more about Adult Learning opportunities in York should visit www.yortime.org.uk or call the council’s adult learning booking line on (01904) 552086.
