Yorkshire Sports Clubs Get Share of £1.4 million

lottery

12:14pm 24th January 2013

Stamford Bridge Community Pool is among 29 sports groups in Yorkshire celebrating legacy investments from Sport England to improve local sports facilities.

£1.4 million of National Lottery funding has today been awarded to sports projects in Yorkshire, taking the number of facilities supported by Inspired Facilities to more than 1,000 – one year ahead of schedule. Sport England say the investments improve local facilities, create new venues for grassroots sport and in some cases allow local clubs to buy the facilities they use.

The fund is part of Sport England’s Places People Play Olympic and Paralympic legacy programme and all improved facilities carry the London 2012 Inspire mark – celebrating the link to the Games, say the organisation.

Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “This National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in the area from last year’s successful Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“With so many clubs in Yorkshire having benefitted from this fund already and building on the success of last summer, this is the legacy people want for their local community.”

Hugh Robertson, the Minister for Sport and Tourism said: “Six months on from the start of the London 2012 Games, we have extremely strong foundations in place for the sports legacy. The Places People Play programme goes from strength to strength and this £16.6 million investment will improve facilities at local sports club across the country, encouraging participation and giving people more opportunities to get involved in sport.”

Sport England say today’s milestone is further evidence of the steps being taken to build on the momentum of 2012, six months on from the Olympic opening ceremony. They add that:

  • Last week Sport England launched a new £40 million fund to help local sports projects
  • Last month £493 million was committed to 46 sports over the next four years
  • 15.5 million people are now playing sport every week, more than ever before.

The 29 projects awarded Lottery funding from Inspired Facilities today include £50,000 to modernise and extend the facilities to include reception and meeting areas at Stamford Bridge Community Pool, say sport England.

Stamford Bridge Community Pool Club Secretary, Caroline Calvert, said: "We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our facilities, improving energy efficiency, reducing operating costs and making the pool more attractive and user-friendly.  The overall impact will be to improve pool usage by all sections of the local community and to provide them with a facility that they will want to use for many years to come."

Other awards include: £50,000 to Church Fenton Cricket Club, £50,000 to York Sports Club Clifton Park and £50,000 to Whixley Cricket Club. Whixley Cricket Club will use the money to demolish a 70 year old cricket pavilion and build a new pavilion that will provide modern facilities.
