Search for Youth MP for York

Young people between the ages of 11-17 years old who are interested in politics are being invited to represent York as a member of the UK Youth Parliament.

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) provides young people with a platform to have their voices heard and listened to by local and national government, services and agencies.

The successful candidate will be elected into the Youth Parliament for one year, where they will:

  • Attend regular meetings to work on issues and campaigns
  • Take part in UKYP’s Annual Sitting in July
  • Have an opportunity to speak at the House of Commons
  • Work closely with York Youth Council
  • Participate in local projects & campaign on behalf of your constituents
    Meet with Councillors and Ministers
  • Attend Regional meetings 5 times a year
  • Be given relevant support & training

Cllr Janet Looker, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People, said: “Young people often have fresh and innovative ideas that can be unheard, so becoming a part of the UK Youth Parliament is providing them with the opportunity to represent the youth in York on a national level.

“I wish everyone who enters the best of luck and I’m looking forward to meeting the successful candidate.”

Potential applicants have until 21 January 2013 to apply and there will be a training session that evening. They must live in York, be between the ages of 11-17 on 1 March 2013, have the consent of their parent or guardian and have sufficient time to fulfil the role.

Nomination forms can found at York schools, youth workers or Mill House, North Street York YO1 6JD.
