Gas Works on Micklegate in York

Drivers in York face eight weeks of disruption from this morning because of gas works on Micklegate.

Northern Gas Networks is investing £135,000 to upgrade gas mains in the Micklegate area of York.

Work on the eight-week project will begin today and will see more than 300 metres of ageing cast iron pipes replaced with modern plastic pipeline that is safer and more reliable, say Northern Gas Networks.

To enable the essential gas works to be carried out quickly and safely, it is necessary to close one side of the road and introduce one-way traffic between Micklegate Bar and George Hudson Street say Northern Gas Networks. They add that parking will also be suspended to allow traffic to keep flowing freely in the area.

Vehicles approaching Micklegate from Bridge Street will be diverted on a signed route along George Hudson Street, Rougier Street, Station Rise, Station Road and Queen Street, according to Northern Gas Networks.

Garry Farnhill from Northern Gas Networks apologised for any potential disruption to motorists: "We know no-one likes to be faced with roadworks and we will do our best to keep any disruption to a minimum.

"The position of the gas pipes means we can’t do the work without closing the road for vehicles travelling westbound from the Bridge Street direction. This won’t affect pedestrian access and businesses in the area will be open as usual.”

The project is part of Northern Gas Networks’ annual £91 million investment programme to replace ageing metal gas pipes across the region
