Thousands Sign Up For Yorkshire Marathon

Yorkshire Marathon 1

8:53am 10th January 2013

More than 3,600 runners have registered to take part in the first ever Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon, it was revealed today.

The impressive total was reached in just over 24 hours since the event’s official launch at Clifford’s Tower in York yesterday morning.

Organisers said they were ‘thrilled’ with the deluge of entries which have come from across the UK, France, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, the USA and even the Bahamas.

The event is being organised by a new company under the Jane Tomlinson’s For All Events umbrella – the organisation set up as a fundraising legacy to the late Yorkshire fundraiser and campaigner Jane Tomlinson CBE who raised almost £2m for charity by tackling a series of endurance challenges, despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Mike Tomlinson, who heads up the organisation bearing his wife’s name, said: “It’s phenomenal – we’re really humbled by the level of interest in the new Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon. We knew it would be popular, but this is just sensational.

“It was always our hope this would become the biggest marathon in the North and judging by people’s appetite for it, we’re well on our way to achieving that.”

The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon – which takes place in and around the ancient city of York on October 20 – was launched yesterday by a host of famous Yorkshire faces who gathered to welcome the event to the White Rose County.

The celebrities marked the arrival of the event by making the ‘Y’ for ‘Yorkshire’, the new symbol of the marathon, which is expected to raise up to £500,000 for charity.

Celebrity supporter Alastair Campbell, himself a keen runner, said today: “Jane Tomlinson was an incredible woman who showed astonishing courage in the face of such a dreadful illness. She was an inspiration to many people, which is clear to see with more than 3,500 people signing up for the marathon in little over 24 hours: that is just fantastic.

“I know the marathon will be a huge success, both in terms of being an amazing run, but also in bringing in a huge amount of money for charity.”

Jamie Ford, the CEO of headline sponsors, Plusnet said, “The deluge of entries really proves The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon has already captured the public’s interest.

“This is going to be one of the most eagerly anticipated events in Yorkshire this year.”

The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon will bring a mass participation marathon closer to home for the thousands of Northern runners keen to push themselves to the ultimate limit, say Yorkshire Marathon organisers. They add that the course is flatter than London, New York and Paris so is perfect for more serious athletes looking for a personal best and fun runners wanting to raise funds for charity.

The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon says runners can choose to raise funds for any cause of their choice or one of the event’s partner charities – Martin House Children’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Parkinson’s UK, the Haven, Clic Sargent, Candlelighters, St Leonard’s Hospice, Sue Ryder Care and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.
